TORONTO — The International Coalition for Human Rights (ICHR) raises grave concerns over the alarming escalation of state-sanctioned violence in Iran. Iranian authorities continue to systematically weaponize the death penalty as an instrument of political repression, targeting protesters, dissidents, and political prisoners in a desperate bid to stifle public dissent.
According to documented human rights reports, at least 444 individuals have been executed in Iran during the first seven months of 2026 alone, including 60 confirmed political prisoners. United Nations reports confirm that at least 56 people have been executed on national-security-related charges since March 19, with 27 of those cases directly linked to the January 2026 nationwide protests. More than 100 additional individuals currently face imminent execution under similar politically motivated charges.
Human rights organizations have meticulously documented systematic and severe violations of fundamental legal and human rights, including:
-
Routine use of torture to extract forced confessions
-
Denial of access to independent legal counsel
-
Expedited, grossly unfair trials conducted without basic due process
-
Politically motivated prosecutions targeting peaceful dissent
-
Executions carried out in secret without public transparency or family notification
The death penalty must never be used as a tool to silence voices, suppress political freedom, or maintain state control. In light of these mounting atrocities, ICHR urgently demands:
-
An immediate, verifiable moratorium on all executions in Iran.
-
Guaranteed fair trials and full access to independent legal representation for all detainees.
-
The immediate and unconditional release of all individuals imprisoned for exercising their fundamental right to peaceful protest and freedom of expression.
-
Independent international investigations into extrajudicial killings, acts of torture, and unlawful executions.
-
Decisive international action and accountability mechanisms to hold perpetrators of state violence responsible.
Silence enables violence. ICHR calls upon the international community, human rights bodies, and partner governments to take immediate, coordinated steps to pressure the Iranian regime to halt these executions and respect international human rights law.
