On the Anniversary of Universal Humanitarian Day, The International Center for Human Rights in Toronto-Canada (ICHR) commemorated over 15 years of fighting for humanity and democracy by announcing it’s annual Award, in recognition of individual’s outstanding contributions and dedications to the advancement of human rights.
Mohammad Najafi, Jailed Iranian Lawyer, and Canadian MP Melissa Lantsman Received the Prestigious Human Rights Award.
The 2024 ICHR Human Rights Award was presented to Melissa Lantsman, Member of Parliament for Thornhill and Deputy Leader of the Conservative Party of Canada.
“MP Lantsman was recognized for her unwavering advocacy for democracy, justice, and human rights. She has been a strong voice in Canada and internationally, speaking out against human rights violations in Iran, calling for the listing of the IRGC as a terrorist organization, and championing the fight against antisemitism, hate crimes, and foreign interference”, said Ardeshir Zarezadeh.
MP Ana Roberts introduced MP Lantsman and spoke about her work in Parliament. Ardeshir Zarezadeh, President of ICHR, then presented the award.
The 2025 ICHR Human Rights Award was awarded to Mohammad Najafi, a jailed Iranian human rights lawyer known for defending political prisoners and exposing state abuses. For his advocacy, Najafi has faced imprisonment, harassment, and the loss of his law license.
Unable to attend due to his imprisonment, his award was accepted on his behalf by fellow lawyer Mark Arnold, who obtained a judgment against the Islamic Republic in a Canadian court.
“Tonight’s honorees remind us that the fight for freedom and justice is global,” said Ardeshir Zarezadeh, ICHR president. “Their courage and resilience inspire us to continue standing with victims of repression and in defense of human dignity everywhere.”
ICHR recognition awards are being presented to human rights defenders and community leaders who have made significant contributions to advancing justice and defending human rights.
ICHR thanks all who attended and supported the event.
