ICHR Official Statement – Political Prisoners in Iran Face Imminent Massacre
Toronto, Canada
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
The International Center for Human Rights (ICHR) expresses its deepest alarm over verified reports that Evin Prison where hundreds of political prisoners, human rights defenders, and ordinary detainees are held, has been severely impacted by military airstrikes amid the war provoked by the Islamic Republic.
This is not a speculative warning. We now have confirmed casualties and verified reports of deliberate state-endorsed neglect and concealment in the aftermath of the attacks.
Confirmed Casualties and Grave Violations:
- At least 4 prisoners (charged with financial crimes) confirmed dead.
- 2 civilians (family members visiting Evin’s legal office) also killed.
- Several prison guards, conscripts, and staff reported dead.
- Internal reports suggest 20 to 30 total deaths, including a mass killing of 16 individuals at once.
- Entire blocks of prisoners have been transferred without warning and without access to medication, personal items, or family contact.
- Among those transferred are female political prisoners, now held in Qarchak Prison with no communication, and visits banned.
- Dozens of male political prisoners from Ward 4 of Evin have been moved to Greater Tehran Prison (Fashafouyeh) under unknown conditions.
- Prisoners with serious conditions such as heart disease, MS, and asthma are now cut off from all medication, creating a medical emergency.
There is no information available about detainees in wards 209, 240, 241, and Alef, the high-security blocks where the regime hides its most politically sensitive prisoners. The fear of torture, disappearance, or summary execution is real and rising.
This Is a Humanitarian Crisis in Motion
The Islamic Republic is not merely failing to protect prisoners, it is actively endangering and disappearing them under the cover of war. The government has enforced a total media blackout, suppressing coverage, harassing journalists, and isolating families in silence.
Airstrikes struck medical clinics, visitation halls, and prosecution buildings inside Evin. This constitutes a targeted assault on a civilian detention facility, in clear violation of international humanitarian law. If proven deliberate, such acts may constitute war crimes.
ICHR Urgently Calls on the Global Community:
We appeal to the United Nations, the European Union, and every democratic, law-abiding nation to act immediately. The facts are no longer deniable. The danger is no longer theoretical.
We demand:
- Immediate release of all political prisoners, beginning with women and the chronically ill.
- Emergency relocation of all remaining detainees to safe facilities with independent monitoring.
- International investigation into the airstrikes, prisoner transfers, and reported killings.
- Legal accountability for the Islamic Republic and its chain of command under international criminal law.
If the world fails to act, history will record this moment as one of preventable slaughter.
This is not war between nations this is a war waged by a criminal regime against its own people, under the shadow of another conflict it helped ignite. Not a political chessboard these are real lives being crushed in darkness while the regime crafts false narratives and blames others.
“This is not a political game. These are human lives in immediate danger. The world must stop watching and start acting. Demand from the regime the safe release of all political prisoners and the immediate evacuation or relocation of all other prisoners from military target zones.”
Ardeshir Zarezadeh, President, International Center for Human Rights (ICHR)
ICHR stands with every grieving family, every prisoner lost in the blackout, and every human being still hoping for justice.
We must warn against the dangerous geopolitical games being played by authoritarian leaders and populists like Donald Trump, who have helped push the region into chaos for personal gain and political distraction.
ICHR is also calling for full transparency, immediate access to prisoners, restoration of contact with families, and urgent delivery of medication and aid. These are not isolated abuses; they are part of a systematic campaign of state violence under the cover of war.
The world must respond. Not tomorrow. Now.
