Statement by the International Center for Human Rights (ICHR) in Canada

The International Center for Human Rights – Canada (ICHR) stands in unwavering solidarity with the courageous truck drivers of Iran who have initiated a nationwide strike to demand their fundamental rights and dignity. This unprecedented movement, which began in the southern port city of Bandar Abbas, has rapidly spread across the nation, encompassing over 177 cities and 29 provinces.

The truckers’ demands are just and reasonable: a 35% to 50% increase in haulage charges to match the soaring inflation and living costs, reduction in exorbitant insurance premiums, elimination of oppressive tolls and customs tariffs, and the provision of basic welfare and health facilities at terminals . These workers, who are the backbone of Iran’s economy, have been subjected to years of exploitation, neglect, and systemic abuse.

In response, the criminal regime, led by the terrorist organization of Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), has resorted to its typical tactics of repression. Reports indicate that over 171 truck drivers have been arrested, with some facing threats of the death penalty for participating in this peaceful protest . The regime’s actions are not only a blatant violation of international human rights standards but also a testament to its illegitimacy and fear of the people’s will.

The IRGC, an entity designated as a terrorist organization by numerous international bodies, continues to wield power through violence, intimidation, and corruption. Its involvement in suppressing peaceful protests and its role in perpetuating systemic abuse against Iranian citizens further underscores the need for global accountability.

The ICHR calls upon the international community to:

  • Condemn the criminal regime’s actions against the striking truck drivers and all peaceful protesters.
  • Demand the immediate and unconditional release of all detained individuals.
  • Impose targeted sanctions on regime officials and entities responsible for human rights abuses.
  • Support the establishment of an independent international tribunal to investigate and prosecute crimes against humanity committed by the terrorist regime.
  • Provide humanitarian aid to those affected by the regime’s crackdown and support organizations working to document and report human rights violations.

The ICHR also extends its support to the International Transport Workers’ Federation (ITF), the Teamsters, and all labor unions worldwide that have expressed solidarity with the Iranian truck drivers . Their collective voice amplifies the call for justice and human dignity.

We stand with the Iranian people in their struggle for freedom, justice, and the right to live without fear. The time has come for the global community to hold the this criminal regime accountable for its crimes and to support the aspirations of the Iranian people for a future free from tyranny and oppression.
