Dear Prime Minister Trudeau,
Dear Minister Joly,

The International Centre for Human Rights Canada (ICHR) welcomes the newly imposed sanctions against the 34 individuals, officials, and organizations of the Iranian regime and strongly calls on the government of Canada to immediately expand these sanctions to include the entirety of IRGC and the regime leaders and enlist them as terrorist entity.

The sanctions imposed upon the 25 Individuals, including Hossein Salami, Commander-in-Chief of the Revolutionary Guards, Mohammad Bagheri, Chief of the General Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces, as well as the 9 Entities for violating human rights, are simply not enough.

The Islamic Regime in Iran commits crimes on a daily basis both within and outside of the nation. On January 08,2020, Canadians witnessed first hand how brutal these crimes can be when 55 Canadians were murdered by the regime, as they launched two missiles and shot down the Ukrainian passenger plane PS 752.

Despite the international community’s outrage over the downing of the flight, there have not been any serious actions taken against the Regime in Iran, an authoritarian regime that holds the record for the highest number of executions in the world after the Chinese communist regime. As a result, the regime continues to murder innocent civilians, the most recent being the death of Mahsa Amini that sparked nationwide protests, and subsequently, the killing of over 200 civilians and the wrongful detainment of 2000+ young protestors and students over a two-week time span.

The systemic crimes at the behest of the Islamic Republic regime have highlighted an urgent need for governments worldwide to take immediate action to ensure an end to these inhumane atrocities, actions such as strong sanctions against all government officials and the IRGC.

Recently, after the murder of Mahsa Amini, 22 years old Iranian girl, for opposing forced Hijab, young people took on the streets and still protesting the tyranny. Many of them were detained, and some were killed.

ICHR firmly calls on the government of Canada to stand in solidarity with the people of Iran and to apply sanctions to the entirety of the regime’s leaders and the IRGC, as well as enlist them as terrorist entities. Moreover, we urge the government of Canada to take the flight PS752 case to the international criminal court and the UN security council.

If such immediate actions are not taken, the Iranian regime will continue to engage in further criminal activities, committing human rights violations and international laws.

Sincerely Yours,
Ardeshir Zarezadeh
