ICHR strongly condemns the killings of the Destitute Fuel Porters By Iran’s Revolutionary Guards, as they used live ammunition against a group of these porters from Iran’s Baluchi minority causing several deaths and injuries.
We also firmly call on the members of the international community to immediately open an transparence independent investigation into the matter and take the sufficient admissible evidence to the UN criminal court of Justice.
Iran’s Revolutionary Guards have unlawfully used lethal force against unarmed fuel porters near the city of Saravan, in Sistan and Baluchestan province which explicitly violates the absolute prohibition on the arbitrary deprivation of the right to life under international law.
At least 10 people, including a 17-year-old boy, were killed in the shooting, according to Baluchi human rights activists
“Killing of unarmed people, by the Iranian security forces have displayed an extremely cruel disregard for human life. There must be an immediate independent criminal investigations into these unlawful killings, under international laws.” Said; Ardeshire Zarezadeh, Executive Director for Iran, and The Middle East at ICHR Canada.
Due to the lack of an independent judiciary in the country, which has resulted in an horrifying appalling track record of impunity, ICHR is seriously concerned about the compliance of this investigation with international law and standards, and as the government of Iran’s track record there won’t be any Justice.
Iranian authorities have refused to disclose the real number of deaths. Top provincial officials have only acknowledged three deaths, and attempted to attribute responsibility to Pakistan’s border guards, which both Pakistani officials and fuel porters present at the scene have denied.
Given the continuous systematic impunity prevailing in Iran for serious human rights violations, use of live ammunition against the civilians whether it’s in the plain shooting or the border, and other crimes.
ICHR strongly urges the members of the international community to push for truth and justice for the grave violations of the right to life committed by Iran’s revolutionary Guard forces on 22 February.
