Gilan provincial police have confirmed reports of “honor killing” of Romina Ashrafi the 14-year-old girl, by her father in a village in the province, and judicial officials have announced a “special investigation” into the case after days of silence.

Earlier, local medias reported that Romina Ashrafi’s father had “cut off her head” with a sickle in her sleep.

The murder took place on the first of the month  in one of the villages of Talesh city in the northern province of Gilan, but the news was published few days later.

Without naming the victim, the head of the deputy of the Gilan police said that the accused in the police investigation stated that the motive for the murder of his daughter was “family disputes and her running away from home.”

The victim, Romina Ashrafi, had run away from home following her father’s opposition to her marrying a man she had “fallen in love with,” according to local media.

After being found and returned home by the police, Ashrafi’s father killed her in her sleep using a sickle.

Ashrafi was handed over to her father despite her “repeated warnings” that she would be in danger at home, according to reports.

After killing his daughter, the father went to the police station with the murder weapon in his hand and confessed to what he had done, according to reports.

The murder has been widely condemned by Iranians on social media.

Since he is the “guardian” of the victim, based on Iran’s Islamic penal code, the father will be exempt from “qisas,” an Islamic term meaning “retaliation in kind,” or retributive justice.
